Cartoon of man confused with a scale

As a God-fearing 25-year-old, I believed using profane language was an abomination that “caused desolation”. unfortunately, English words, unlike the romance and Afro-Asiatic languages do not give you an authentic explanation of an expression you need to say. I realized, however, that there are certain circumstances and situations that could only be fully described with a profane word in English. One of them is Bullshit. A word I detested as a child of God on one hand, on the other hand, after reading Harry Frankfurt’s book explaining bullshit during a class I took on the effect and affect theory during my master's program, I gave myself academic license to use and say it more.

When Frankfurt’s analysis on bullshit was first published as an essay in 1986, no one could have predicted the philosophical sensation (and hilarious situation) it would cause in the 21st century. The original essay was received the same way most academic articles are received, i.e. without attention from the press or the public.

Bullshit is when people make statements with no regard for the truth. It seems like lying but it’s worse. Liers know the truth and misrepresent it, bullshiters are indifferent to how things really are. They exaggerate the truth to convince you because winning your attention is their prime concern. However, a bullshitter cannot and does not admit this openly. This is a marketing trick PR and advertising experts have used over the years and they still do.

Bullshit is when my one-month-old boss fired me with no reason and no conversation on my offense but realized later it was because I was keeping to myself. I wasn’t given any form of onboarding session my silence was me trying to understand how things work.

When what you ordered online is outrightly different from what you got. Don’t get me started on skincare brands that promise you supple skin but give you major reactions after first use or worse, bleach out your melanin.

When we post our wins while evading our failures on LinkedIn. Forgetting failing is all part of the journey. Bullshit!

When intelligent people make beautifully curated excuses for something or a reason they act the way they do. For example, I’m a Scorpio not rude. ok. I’m eyes rolling and whispering bullshit.

When political aspirants make a plethora of promises with no blueprint as to how to fulfill their promises. They care less whether their statements are true or not, as long as they have the desired accolades. Bullshit!

When we use Snapchat to filter our insecurities and blemishes for the world to see us as perfect. bullshit.

When couples in abusive marriages act like all is Rosey and bright in their lives for their online community to see them as couple goals. Argh. Bullshit.

This boy or girl you really like is sending out flirtatious, but non-committal social signals, leading you on with no intention to become romantically involved. modern dating calls it breadcrumbing. Psychologists call it emotional manipulation. I still call it bullshit.
